Battle of the Books
The media center in our county middle schools, sponsor the Battle of the Books program, which is designed to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level. Perspective team members begin reading the selected titles over the summer and continue reading and even re-reading throughout the school year. They must become experts on each and every one of the 26 titles on the list.Book titles are nominated and selected by librarians with the North Carolina State Battle of the Books committee. The various genres represent literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature and include classics, award winners, and new favorites.
The goal of the Battle of the Books program is to broaden student’s literary experiences and improve their reading skills, while also increasing their basic knowledge base.
WMS Battle of the Books students have won county competition for the last eight years and advanced to state competition after winning regionally in 2010 and 2011.
