Home / School News / Exploring Surface Area

Mrs. Danyiele Hyatt’s math classes participated in an introductory Surface Area exploration activity.  Students were given various boxes, graph paper, scissors, and tape.  Without instruction they were tasked with determining the surface area of their boxes.  Most students attempted to wrap or trace their boxes with the graph paper, while others decomposed their boxes and calculated the areas for each face.  No matter their strategy, each student was successful in discovering the meaning of surface area.
