On Saturday January 16th , 15 WMS Jazz Band students left WMS at 6 AM to travel to William Hough HS in Cornelius, NC. to audition against students from middle school jazz programs from the western portion of NC (Murphy to Charlotte)  for a position in one of two All Region Jazz Bands.The top middle school band (A Band) and the second band (B Band) each contain only 2 alto saxes, 2 tenor saxes, 1 bari sax, 5 trombones, 5 trumpets, a drummer, a bass player, piano player and a guitar player (19 kids per band for a total of 38 selected based on audition results. A record 7 positions out of 38 were WMS Jazz Band students.
Those students were:
-Robert Super- 1st chair tenor sax-A Band- Eligible to audition for All State Jazz Band
– Kennan Huskinson- 3rd chair trombone- A Band- Eligible to audition for All State Jazz Band
-Coleman Ammons- 1st chair drummer and guitar- A Band- Eligible to audition for All State Jazz Band
– Dalton Burley-2nd chair tenor sax- B Band
-Kevin Wenzel- 2nd chair alto sax B Band
-Luke Mina- 1st chair trombone- B Band
On Friday and Saturday, February 5th  and 6th, these students participated in the clinic held at Asheville High School.  The A Band was directed by Ronnie Ward, renowned jazz instructor from Goose Creek Bands in South Carolina and the B Band was directed by retired Haywood County music educator D. Sanford Boone.  WMS students participated in the concluding concert held on Saturday afternoon.
